Local Press Enterprise Munday March 7 2005 3 MAIN STREET BEAT Korean visitor attends classes A fifth grade class at Memorial Elementary School in Bloomsburg had a daily visitor from Korea during the month of January Joy Moon attended fifth grade classes in January to see what a US school is like To show their gratitude for visit her parents donated $200 to the schoolat the end of January Principal Karen Hess explained that Joy is a friend of a fifth grade Memorial student who moved from Korea to Bloomsburg Joy attends a year round school in Korea and had a vacation during January enabling her to visit Blooms burg Hess said Joy did not officially enroll at Memorial dur ing January but she'participated in classes and even went PETER KENDRON on a field trip to the Pennsylvania arm Show in Harrisburg Hess said the $200 from the family will buy a gift for the fifth grade Town foundation looking for grant applicants The Bloomsburg Community oundation is accepting grant appli cations from area non profits until April 30 The foundation was formed in 1998 with $200000 set aside from interest on a federal grant given to Magee Indus trial Enterprises Town secretary Diana Wagner said the foundation gives out small grants each year to help non profit organizations in town oper ate Applications can be picked up at Town Hall or appli cants can call Wagner at 784 7123 ext 119 Busy month at Children's Museum The Museum is once again looking for the public's help to donate items for a display But this time looking for something few people would want to keep around their homes The theme this year is and as part of that theme they have an exhibit about in So organizers are looking for inactive hornet and wasp nests as well as bee hives or honeycombs said Museum director Deb Rhodes going to be talking about how hornets and wasps nests utilize paper and how people were inspired by the nests to make their own Rhodes said The museum has a number of workshops set up on Sat urday afternoons for the rest of the month what will be going on at each one: Saturday 1 5 pm Building in Nature interactive workshop with guest presenters and artists Saturday March 19 1 5 pm Building in Nature hands on workshop At 1 pm Kenneth Wilson a local artist art educator and beekeeper will give a presentation on bees Throughout the afternoon there also will be an interactive display on geodesic domes and nature Rhodes said Saturday March 26 2 pm Local musician KJ Wag ner on guitar will host a lively sing along All the workshops are open to the public and no regis tration is required Admission to the Children's Museum is $3 for children and adults There is no admission charge for children 2 years old and younger Museum hours through April 2 are noon to 5 pm Tues day through Saturday Beginning April 5 through Decem ber hours will be 10 am to 4 pm Tuesday through ri day and noon to 5 pm Saturday Museum's history being probed As part of their theme Museum organizers also are looking for some information about the history oftheir own building know it was a PPL service department and then the riendship fire Rhodes said hoping that people may have pictures or memen computer lab The State System of Higher Education has picked BU to receive a $75000 grant to purchase 17 Sun AMD comput ers The lab will serve as a place to train for JAVA cert i fication according to a report University President Jessica Kozloff gave to the Council of Trustees last month BU spokeswoman Liza Benedict said the computers will likely be placed in Centennial Hall illing the library with laughter Storyteller Patricia Wintersteen bets she can make the kids at the library laugh tonight in a program called not surprisingly I Can Make You Wintersteen will start telling silly stories to children between ages 3 and 8 beginning around 6:30 pm It will be followed by a craft project All children must be accompa nied by an adult There will be another program at 6:30 pm Thursday A
